First Impressions

If Sam Gerard moved to Alaska, he’d probably look a lot like Arliss Cutter.

The Setup

Cutter, a U.S. Marshal, hunts for a missing deputy in Alaska’s brutal wilderness.

What Worked for Me

– Alaska as villainous setting. My wife and I lived in Western Alaska for three and a half years and loved it. While it is a harsh and brutal place to live, the culture is fascinating and this book series nails it!

– Cutter’s stoic grit. He’s like John Wayne and Jack Reacher combined. He lives by a code ‘Grumpy’s Rules’.

– Fast pace. It’s a kind of neat mix of police procedural and typical thriller. I read these books very quickly.

What Didn’t Work

Cutter’s not big on banter—leaner on dialogue. It took a bit for Lola, his partner, to really grow on me.

Who Should Read It

Fans of Reacher or Longmire who love survival stakes. Also, if you love Rural Alaska, or are curious about it, read this series. It’s the most culturally accurate and responsible book about Alaska and it’s native people that I’ve found.

Verdict

Open Carry is part mystery, part survival test, and pure Alaskan grit. I enjoyed this book and love this series. Marc Cameron is a great author and a nice guy. We’ve exchanged a few emails.
